LumaSmart product offerings and markets are expanding, as its headcount in Macomb Township.
The 10-year-old LED light manufacturer got its start with automobiles for both auto manufacturers and the military. That market has steadily grown while LumaSmart has expanded into streetlight retrofits, parking lots, and spotlights.
"LED light is probably one of the easiest ways to achieve sustainability," says Justin Palm, director of sales & marketing for
LumaSmart
. "The payback is relatively quick."
LED lights have become the poster child for electricity conservation among environmentalists in recent years. Their rapid adoption in the U.S. over the next 20 years is expected to reduce the demand for electricity used for illumination by 62 percent, eliminate 258 million metric tons of carbon emissions, prevent construction of 133 new power plants, and save over $115 billion.
LumaSmart is already reaping those benefits. Its staff has doubled in the last year to 22 employees, six independent contractors, and a few summer interns. It's also on schedule to double its revenue over the next year on the strength of sales increases.
